Correction of protruding ears is done during childhood or in adults. Usually the surgeon choses one technique and sticks to it.

The right age

A correction of protruding ears is recommended for a pre-school age (around 5 years). This is done to prevent teasing by other school-children. Generally, the surgery is possible at this age, because the auricle has reached its almost final size at an early age.

For an adult this surgery is possible at any time, if no other medical reasons to the contrary. The different texture of the adult auricular cartilage calls for a detailed information of the patient about the suitable surgical technique.

First of all, the surgeon has to listen to the patient to find out, what problem he has with his ears. He has to analyse the reason for correction. It is not enough to look at the auricle, he has to touch an feel the strength of the auricular cartilage and the texture skin.

The firmness of the auricular cartilage is of vital importance for the selection of the suitable surgical technique. Of similar importance is the necessity to modify this technique to adapt it to the individual case.

It makes a difference whether the ear is protruding because the chondral relief of the auricle is not properly rounded or whether the chondral relief is too large and therefore makes the ear protrude. Both phenomena are treated with different surgical techniques.
